Dry Ice Safety Guide for Pakistan — Handling, Storage, and Transport

Dry ice at -78.5°C causes cryogenic frostbite on bare skin contact. This guide covers safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal of solid CO2 in Pakistan.

Dry ice at -78.5°C causes cryogenic frostbite within seconds of bare skin contact. It sublimates into CO2 gas that displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces. It must never be stored in airtight containers. These three properties define all safe handling procedures for solid CO2 in Pakistan’s commercial, industrial, and domestic contexts.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

All dry ice handling requires specific protective equipment:

Cryogenic Insulated Gloves

Always wear thick, insulated cryogenic gloves rated for temperatures below -80°C when handling dry ice pellets or pellets. Leather or rubber gloves provide insufficient protection — use specialist thermal gloves.

Protective Eye Shields

Dry ice can crack and project small fragments during handling or cutting. Wear protective goggles or a full face shield whenever breaking or cutting dry ice pellets.

Dry Ice Scoop or Tongs

Never move dry ice pellets or block fragments with bare hands. Use a metal or plastic dry ice scoop. Tongs are appropriate for small block handling.

Closed-Toe Footwear

If dry ice fragments fall from a block or container, bare feet or open sandals provide no protection against cryogenic burns. Wear closed-toe shoes or boots in all handling areas.

Safe Storage of Dry Ice in Pakistan

Ventilated, Insulated Containers Only

Dry ice must be stored in ventilated insulated containers with loose-fitting lids. Never use airtight or hermetically sealed containers — sublimating CO2 builds pressure rapidly and causes container rupture.

Room Temperature Storage Area

Store dry ice containers in a ventilated room at ambient temperature. Do not place dry ice in a household freezer — the concentrated CO2 damages compressors and presents asphyxiation risk in small spaces.

Ventilation Requirements

In a small room (under 15 square metres), sublimating CO2 from 5 kg of dry ice can raise CO2 concentration to dangerous levels within 30 minutes. Always store and use dry ice in well-ventilated areas with active air movement.

Dry Ice Transport Safety in Pakistan

Vehicle Ventilation

Never transport dry ice in a sealed vehicle cabin. CO2 gas from sublimating dry ice accumulates in confined vehicle interiors, causing dizziness, headaches, and unconsciousness at high concentrations. Always transport in an open truck bed or a well-ventilated cargo vehicle with windows open.

UN1845 Labelling for Commercial Shipments

All commercial dry ice shipments in Pakistan must be labelled with the Class 9 UN1845 hazardous material designation. DRY ICE PAKISTAN includes all required labelling on bulk and commercial shipments.

Air Transport Restrictions

Pakistani aviation regulations (PCAA) permit a maximum of 2.5 kg of dry ice per passenger as checked baggage, and up to 2.5 kg as carry-on for medical purposes, with airline approval. Commercial air cargo uses Class 9 UN1845 designated shipping containers.

Safe Use in Pakistani Commercial Kitchens

Culinary and Cocktail Applications

Dry ice pellets must never be added directly to drinks intended for swallowing. Ingesting solid CO2 causes severe internal tissue injury. Use ChilliStick sealed containers for all cocktail fog effects — they release CO2 gas through controlled vents while keeping pellets safely contained.

Kitchen Ventilation Requirements

Catering kitchens and wedding event halls using dry ice for culinary presentations must maintain active exhaust ventilation. Pakistan’s Food Safety Authority (PSQCA) guidelines require ventilation in all food preparation areas using CO2-based cooling agents.

Dry Ice Disposal

Allow Sublimation in a Ventilated Area

Do not attempt to dispose of dry ice in rubbish bins, drains, or toilets. Leave unused dry ice in a ventilated outdoor area and allow it to sublimate completely into CO2 gas.

Never Submerge in Water

Placing dry ice in water without ventilation in a closed area generates significant CO2 gas rapidly. Always perform dry ice-water mixing (for fog effects) in well-ventilated spaces.
