How Long Does Dry Ice Last in Pakistan? Storage and Sublimation Guide

Dry ice lasts 24–72 hours depending on container quality, ambient temperature, and quantity. Learn how to maximise dry ice lifespan in Pakistan.

Dry ice lasts 24–72 hours in a commercial insulated container, sublimating at a rate of 5%–10% per 24 hours. In Pakistan’s summer heat, without proper insulation, dry ice sublimates at up to 15%–20% per hour in open air. The storage container, ambient temperature, and total quantity are the three variables that determine how long your dry ice lasts.

Dry Ice Sublimation Rates by Container Type

Container quality is the primary determinant of dry ice lifespan:

High-Density EPS Insulated Containers

DRY ICE PAKISTAN delivers all orders in thick expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulated containers. These maintain internal temperatures below -70°C for 48–72 hours, with sublimation rates of 5%–10% per 24 hours.

Standard Styrofoam Coolers

Commercial styrofoam coolers with 25mm wall thickness maintain dry ice for 24–36 hours. Sublimation rate is approximately 10%–15% per 24 hours depending on ambient temperature.

Cardboard Boxes

Cardboard provides minimal insulation. Dry ice stored in cardboard boxes in Pakistan’s summer heat sublimates at 20%–30% per hour and becomes unusable within 3–6 hours.

Thermos and Vacuum-Insulated Containers

Never store dry ice in hermetically sealed or airtight containers. Sublimating CO2 gas builds pressure and will rupture sealed containers. Use only ventilated insulated containers with loose-fitting lids.

Impact of Pakistan’s Climate on Dry Ice Lifespan

Pakistan’s climate significantly affects dry ice sublimation rates:

Summer (May–September): 40°C–48°C Ambient

During Pakistan’s peak summer, ambient temperatures in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi reach 40°C–48°C. In an EPS container, expect the upper range of the 10% sublimation rate. Open-air sublimation exceeds 15% per hour.

Winter (November–February): 5°C–15°C Ambient

Pakistan’s winter months reduce ambient heat dramatically. In a standard EPS container during winter, dry ice sublimation drops to 3%–5% per 24 hours, extending effective lifespan to 96+ hours.

How to Maximise Dry Ice Life in Pakistan

Fill Container Airspace

Every cubic centimetre of air inside your container accelerates sublimation. Fill all empty space with crumpled newspaper, bubble wrap, or packing foam. This reduces internal air circulation and significantly extends dry ice lifespan.

Use the Correct Container Size

A 10 kg block of dry ice in a 50-litre container has too much airspace. Use containers sized to your order — a 10 kg order fits best in a 15–20 litre container with airspace minimised.

Keep Containers Out of Direct Sunlight

Store dry ice containers in shaded areas, away from direct sunlight. In Pakistan’s summer, sunlit surfaces reach 60°C+, dramatically accelerating external heat transfer into the container.

Do Not Refrigerate — Use Room Temperature or Cooler

Storing dry ice in a regular freezer (-18°C) still results in sublimation, and the concentrated CO2 gas can damage the freezer compressor. Store in insulated containers at room temperature in a ventilated space.

Dry Ice Lifespan by Order Quantity

Larger quantities of dry ice last proportionally longer due to the ratio of surface area to total mass:

QuantityContainerEstimated Duration (Summer)
2 kgStyrofoam cooler12–18 hours
5 kgStandard EPS box24–36 hours
10 kgCommercial EPS48–60 hours
25 kgIndustrial EPS72–84 hours
